Haunting Violet
I started out reading this book as research for an agent and ended by staying up late to finish it. Violet is the illegitimate daughter of a Victorian "spiritualist" -- in this case, one of the many frauds and hoaxsters of the movement. Violet is forced to go along with the tricks and trappings. She's not skilled enough with her needle to be a seamstress and too pretty to be hired as a governess, so it's this or pickpocketing. And then, to her own surprise and fear, Violet starts being visited by real spirits.
This is a great October read for all ages.
